Ted's Nerdly Naked Top 10

1) Windows Defender
Download it now and install it, have it run on a schedule at some point in the day when you're computer is always on and you're never using it. Like in the morning when you check your email before work and hop in the shower. That 10 minutes it takes you to shower (it takes me twenty cause i'm so skinny i can't get warm i've got to run around in the shower just to get wet) let Windows Defender clean out all the crap and update itself.

2) Spybot S&D
Download it now and install it. Updated daily, Spybot Search & Destroy knows what your computer doesn't. It knows what your computer doesn't need, doesn't like, and knows how to get rid of it fast and protect your computer from future problems.

3) Mozilla Firefox
Download it now and install it. Fast, easy, reliable: that's what i love about firefox, it's got everything you need from internet explorer and all the stuff you don't need is still right there in internet explorer if you ever want to go back. I do all my email and surfing on Firefox and my banking on IE. Some companies just haven't put money into R&D for firefox yet so I trust IE for everything that needs to be encrypted like transactions & such. CTRL-T adds tabs so you can surf multiple sites in the same window. IE 7 is doing that now, but their system is too streamlined it's got a big learning curve. Simple people want simple software. Choose Firefox!

4) Azureus Vuze
Unleash the Torrents! Torrents are these tiny little files. They're like Links or portals into new universes. You click the link and your instantly portaled to a hundred different universes. It's not your standard click and download. It's click and download everything as fast as possible. You download everything in particles instead of generation 1 start to finish. You download the fastest and most available pieces first and the rest follow. Downside is you have to keep an eye on Seeds/Leechers. Seeds represent the number of people who have the finished product. Leechers are the Locusts sucking the juice out of the seeds ie. Leaching from the source. And you can download everything from both of them. All this stuff is coming at you like rays of light from the sun, some directly & some is just reflected.

5) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Symantec's Norton is very disagreeable with system performance. Symantec's programs try to take over your internet explorer with unnecessary pzazz, and frequently run memory hogging programs in the background. They label them services and when you try to uninstall it says. Can't uninstall Norton Anti-Virus, Live Update is currently working to update your system. Well, of course, I tend to laugh at that because i usually have no internet connection so it's quite impossible that any updating could be occurring. So the big lengthy process that ensues in uninstaling Symantec's Norton involves first going to Start -> Run -> services.msc where you will need to locate Live Update or anything that says Symantec or Norton and Right Click for properties and choose Startup: Disable, next attempt to stop the program and wait. If it fails, hit Okay and go to Start -> Run -> msconfig and hit boot.ini here you're going to want to change boot options to safeboot with minimal as your option. Next Restart to safemode. In safemode, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, find Live Update, uninstall live update. Go back to msconfig in the Run box go to boot.ini and reset Boot Options back to Normal mode. Restart the computer and go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and find Norton/Symantec Anti Virus and choose Uninstall / Remove from the subsequent dialog boxes. I feel very strongly that any program that take this long to get rid of and that the average user would have no idea how to get it off their computer. If you use Symantec you've already seen frequent "Please update your subscription for another six months by paying us 90.00 dollars" that is absurd. Enterprise software obviously requires that for multiple computers you purchase their software, but for the personal computer user almost every company has a free anti-virus just so they can get a shoe in on your computer with the off chance that you'll upgrade later and Pay for something else in their product lineup. Luckily there really is a plethora of online software out there that takes care of all your needs and thats what I hope to keep you updated on right here.

I choose AVG Free Anti-Virus & AVG Free Anti-Spyware

I've been using AVG Free Anti-Virus for about the last year now and haven't received one pop up or Try This: Special Offer $49.99. I'm very pleased that they respect the individuals simple needs with simple protection that checks itself and updates itself automatically. You'll know when there's a problem with your AVG when you boot up and the AVG box which usually is Yellow, Black, Green, & Red is only Gray and Black. That means something needs to be manually updated. So just double click the gray and black box and find the option from the subsequent menu that's Red ie : in an error state. Click it and hit update. There's usually a priority update that you need to manually select and choose update. Other than this small procedure AVG mostly runs when your computer boots up the first time and you never need to worry about it.
